"Restlessness. Longing. These things don't go away just because of what we call progress. We still search. We still pursue the idea. We land. We cast off. With luck, we make waves. But finally we have no control of the tide."
The Playwright from David Hare's The Blue Room

The Blue Room is a modern adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's "La Ronde". David Hare, one of England's most celebrated living playwrights, has re-set these circular scenes of love and betrayal in the present day. With just two actors playing all the parts, he has created a fascinating landscape of dream and longing that is as eternal as Schnitzler's original series of sketches that were written over a century ago.

The Blue Room was first performed at the Donmar Warehouse in London, England in September 1998 and starred Nicole Kidman and Iain Glen. It was directed by Academy Award Winner Sam Mendes (director of the film "American Beauty"). The production garnered international attention and was later brought to Broadway, where it played to sold out audiences.

The Blue RoomResurgence Theatre Company, in co-operation with blue, staged The Blue Room at the Poor Alex Theatre in the heart of Toronto's Annex neighborhood from March 16 to April 1, 2001. This intimate and unique performance space is ideal for such an engaging play and provides the challenge of interpreting David Hare's text with simplicity and imagination.
