Resurgence Theatre Company prepared a a half-day workshop with leading theatre instructors from:

  • Ryerson Theatre School
  • Humber College
  • George Brown Theatre School
  • Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, among others.

Sessions included vocal/physical warm up, audition techniques, performing Shakespeare, and the opportunity to learn more about what to expect at theatre school from a panel of guests and theatre school alumni.

Presenters - Workshops

IAN WATSON - TEXT WORKSHOP
Ian studied at the Vancouver Playhouse Acting School under David Latham. He was a member of the Stratford Festival’s Acting Company for four seasons (1984, 1986, 1989 and 1990). Previous to that, he was part of The National Arts Centre’s English Theatre Company from 1981-1984, appearing there in over 11 major productions. He has also performed with MTC, The Grand Theatre, Centaur Theatre, Persephone Theatre, The Piggery Theatre and Theatre Lac Brôme, among others. From 1996 to 2001 he was a text teacher at the National Theatre School of Canada, coaching and assisting on productions and teaching Shakespeare to all three acting classes. From 2001 to 2007, he was a text teacher and coach with Stratford’s Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training, under principal David Latham. He now is a guest instructor there under the current principal, Martha Henry. Ian is a frequent acting teacher at the University of Waterloo and Shakespeare instructor at George Brown College. Presently, he teaches Shakespeare to both second and fourth-year acting students at the Ryerson Theatre School.

DARLENE SPENCER - IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP
Darlene received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from York University in Theatre Performance and is a graduate of the University of Waterloo Drama Department. She has directed over 50 theatrical productions, as well as documentary, educational and industrial film and digital video.

Selected directorial credits include Three Cities in the Life of Norman Bethune by Tim Brady and Bradyworks, Les Belles Soeurs by Michel Tremblay, The Apple Tree by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, Unity 1918 by Kevin Kerr, Seven Stories by Morris Panych, String of Pearls by Michele Lowe, The Children's Hour by Lillian Hellman, Our Country's Good and The Grace of Mary Traverse by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Water by Brad Curtain.

Darlene is an actor who has performed in theatres across Canada, and for television and film. Lastly, she is an educator who has taught at the University of Waterloo, York University, and she is currently the Co-ordinator of the Acting Area at the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts where she also directs and teaches.
