With its bare-bones staging and uncut text, this Hamlet is a back-to-basics Bard that relies on words and actors
Shakespeare in a tent by the water. It was the basic formula on which the Stratford Shakespeare Festival was founded more than half a century ago and one that remains in use across Canada, from Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach, to Saskatoon’s Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, to the York Shakespeare Festival on the banks of Fairy Lake in Newmarket.

The connection between mighty Stratford and little York is especially strong this year. The Newmarket festival, produced by Resurgence Theatre and now in its 12th season, is presenting Hamlet with erstwhile Stratford leading man Graham Abbey in the title role. Shakespeare's Hamlet is a brooding study of madness and deceit, an exploration of the darker side of love and passion - but does it make for good "theatre in the park"? The answer is a resounding Yes - thanks to Director Lee Wilson, and a superb cast.

Hamlet is this year's offering in the Resurgence Theatre Company's York Shakespeare Festival, staged in the tent at Fairy Lake Park. Wilson found his Hamlet in Stratford veteran and star of the TV series The Border, Graham Abbey - even though Hamlet was one role that Abbey had never attempted.
