NEWS ARCHIVES RESURGENCE AND THE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL UNITE TO CREATE PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM Resurgence Theatre Company is taking their educational initiatives for youth to new heights this summer thanks to a partnership with Country Day School (CDS) of King Township. Fourteen secondary school students from York Region will have the opportunity to participate in the first ever Summer Youth Theatre Conservatory, an intensive professional theatre training program that will run from July 2 to August 28, 2002. Recognizing the need for a practical theatre training program, Resurgence has designed a curriculum that will allow fourteen students (twelve actors, one designer and one stage manager) the opportunity to not only learn about how the professional theatre works, but also gain professional experience in the process. A large part of the program will include participation in the production of a play for young audiences that will be performed as part of the York Shakespeare Festival. The program will also include classes in movement, voice and character development in addition to workshops in aspects such as costume/set design, directing, stage management and producing taught by leading professionals from the Canadian theatre industry. The Conservatory will be housed in the new Country Day School Performing Arts Centre, a state-of-the-art facility boasting a theatre, drama/music classrooms, wardrobe and set construction workshops and a classroom that has been specially designed for technical production instruction. Established in 1972, Country Day School is a co-educational private day school offering classes to those in grades junior kindergarten through to OAC. Resurgence and CDS are currently applying to the Ministry of Education to make the program an accredited secondary school drama course applicable towards the participant’s diploma. The inaugural Conservatory will be directed by Toronto director/actor/choreographer Marc Richard. Mr. Richard has directed and performed in theatres across Canada. Most recently with The Belfry Theatre in Victoria, The National Arts Centre, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto and the du Maurier World Stage Festival. A graduate of the Toronto Dance Theatre, Mr. Richard possesses a wealth of knowledge and professional experience in movement, voice and acting.
