The ninth of twelve children, John McDermott comes from a traditional Irish Catholic family that emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1965. His love for singing developed at home, watching his father Peter, a clarion tenor, sing traditional Scottish ballads to Johnny Mathis at family gatherings. John continued his informal training at the St. Michael's Choir School in Toronto. At the age of 39, he was discovered by media mogul Conrad Black who financed John's first album, which eventually won him a long-term recording contract with first with EMI Music Canada and additionally with EMI/ Angel Records.

The first record, Danny Boy, which was originally recorded as a tribute to his parents for their 50th wedding anniversary, initiated a career that has thus-far included twelve North American releases (of these, two attained Canadian platinum, one double platinum and one gold status), five Juno nominations, and sold out performances across North America. His initial success led to his participation in PBS phenomenon The Irish Tenors, which generated a US gold record, two U.S. tours, and prestigious bookings, including Good Morning America and The Today Show.
